“Academic Advisor Fiasco”

Name: [Anonymous]

NYU School/College: NYU School of Professional Studies (SPS)

Year of Study: 2024

Title of Your Story: “Academic Advisor Fiasco”

Your Experience: I encountered what I can only describe as a profound level of incompetence in handling basic administrative tasks. Repeated attempts to communicate via email and phone calls with my academic advisor were met with silence. Further, reaching out to their supervisor yielded no response. A particularly troubling incident involved an interaction with a receptionist who exhibited unprofessional behavior, including asking inappropriate personal questions unrelated to my academic queries.

Challenges Faced: One of the key issues was the inability of the academic advisors to generate a degree progress report in a timely manner, spanning over two weeks. The lack of response from both my advisor and their supervisor necessitated escalation to higher authorities, including the dean, assistant dean, and their respective secretaries, to even acknowledge my concerns.

Resolution: As of now, I am still awaiting a resolution. This delay and mismanagement have led to a situation where I am required to enroll in additional credits, as previously approved courses do not meet my degree requirements. This will result in significant financial and time costs, estimated at over $10,000 and an extension of my studies by at least six months.

Lessons Learned/Advice: Based on my experience, I advise students to initiate contact with departmental staff well in advance – ideally 3-6 months ahead of when a response is needed. It may also be prudent to have contact details for the entire school’s administrative staff to escalate matters if required.

Additional Comments: The level of service I received has been deeply dissatisfying. Considering the significant investment of time and finances into my education at NYU, the subpar service is not just disappointing; it feels unjust.
